Home Fire Safety Tips to Help Keep You Safe

Fire Prevention Month takes place in October. It is dedicated to raising fire safety awareness and educating others on precautionary steps to keep your home and family protected!

According to the National Fire Protection Association, many homes see an increase in fires, deaths, and injury during the colder months, when people turn on their heat to keep their homes warm. Keep yourself and your home safe this season by following these home fire safety tips below:

Check Heating Sources

Check that all heating sources such as fireplaces, wood stoves, and furnaces are well maintained. Always be sure to check and/or fix the equipment before turning on. Eliminate any clutter, draperies, and furniture near any heating sources. Download our Decluttering Checklist.

Use Battery Operated Candles

Consider opting for battery-operated flameless candles to prevent fire hazards. Flameless candles are not only a safer alternative, but come in a variety of styles and scents to mimic traditional candles and last years!

Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Ensure that all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly by testing them monthly and replacing batteries annually. According to National Day Calendar, you should place detectors on every level and bedroom in the house.

Place Fire Extinguishers Throughout Your Home

Keep a fire extinguisher in the home.  Place fire extinguishers on every level of the home including the garage and kitchen. The National Safety Council recommends using the acronym, PASS to make sure you remember how to operate it in case of an emergency.

  • Pull the pin.
  • Aim low at the base of the fire.
  • Squeeze the handle slowly.
  • Sweep the nozzle side to side.

If you have a fire extinguisher, check its expiration date and replace when expired.

Additional Home Fire Safety Measures

  • Create an escape plan. Then practice fire drills with the members in your home to make sure everyone knows where to go in case of a fire. The escape plan should include at least two ways to exit the house, and a place for everyone to meet once evacuated.
  • Consider purchasing a fireproof box to keep valuable documents safe. In the event of a house fire, do not to try and salvage any items before leaving the house; remember, you can always replace personal items.
  • Pet-proof your home to ensure there are no areas where your pet can accidently start a fire.
